Search Engine Optimization
 Simply put, it's coding a website so that search engines can easily read it and adding content that is unique and valuable to visitors. Many SEO's would prefer you to think that all you have to do is cram keyphrases throughout the meta tags and body copy and have a lot of other websites linking to you (link reciprocity - where you link to each other) but that's not the case. If you have valuable content that is unique and valuable, then other's will link to you for that very reason, without requiring you to link back to them.
If you already have what you think is valuable content, plenty of it, and other's linking to you without your having to link back to them and you have no PageRank (Google's score of a web page), then perhaps you have somethings working against you that you are unaware of.
Here is a list of things you can immediately check to see if it's holding your website back from it's potential.
- Check your server. If your website is hosted by a computer that also hosts a spammer, then your website is also being penalized for spam. www.dnsstuff.com is a great place to check on this.
- Are you interlinking with other websites that are on your hosting server? If you have mulitple web sites and you are linking them with each other on the same server, then Google assumes you are a webmaster trying to manipulate the link popularity score and is penalizing you.
- Do you have multiple domain names pointing to your website? If so, Google sees your multiple domain names as duplicate content. You need to funnel your domains to one domain and then permanently redirect that one domain to the actual domain/website you want to use. This keeps Google from seeing your multiple domains as duplicate content. Duplicate content is frowned upon and penalized by Google.

Expectations:
Acquiring rank in the search engines is a very time consuming job.
At the end of 3 months, the site will have moved in ranking for its own company name and a few select, less competitive key phrases.
At the end of 6 months, there should be a significant increase in rank for the company name and moderately competitive key phrases.
At the end of 9 months, the company name should be in the top 10 for Google, MSN, and Yahoo and in top 50-100 for competitive key phrases and top 20 for the less competitive key phrases.
At best, barring any unforeseen issues, it takes a site that has already been established on the Internet to acquire rank in a minimum of one year.
